OUR STRENGTH
A diversity of talents working all together is our one and unique strength.
This project will explore the possibility of standardizing and implementing the high-capacity, cost-effective and highly predictive preclinical screening models of ocular drug bioavailability used in research laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry. The effects of the physicochemical characteristics and the formulation components of ophthalmic formulations on the ocular drug permeability observed using preclinical in vitro (cell-based) and ex vivo (tissue-based) screening models of the cornea and conjunctiva will be studied. One or a combination of these models should be routinely used by the pharmaceutical industry for the permeability testing and bioavailability prediction of topically applied ophthalmic drugs.
The proposed project will add to the strength of collaboration program between research groups from academia and industry, driving innovative testing, especially in the area of ocular drug delivery systems development where there are huge unmet needs and a lot of work to be done.
OUR TEAM MEMBERS

Senior Director, GR&D Preformulation PLIVA Ltd. Her area of expertise is the biopharmaceutical evaluation of drugs including the permeability testing, development of the models for in vitro/in vivo correlation (IVIVC), development and validation of diverse analytical methods.

Assistant Professor FBF UofZg Has been actively involved in ocular delivery studies since 2002. He developed a novel nonionic surfactant/chitosan micelle nanosystem for ocular delivery and demonstrated its capacity to enhance the precorneal drug retention and release reaching high bioavailability levels.

Assistant Professor FBF UofZg Has significant experience working with various cell lines and primary cultures from her previous pre-doctoral and post-doctoral work at both, McGill University, and the International Centre for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (ICGEB).
